I
was on a late afternoon search for Elk. I always check the seeps that I
have found over the last 15 years for wallows. I was just getting
to were one such seep started out of the mountain when I noted noise
and movement in the the brush . I quickly realized that it was a bull
making a wallow. I closed to 50 yards and could get no closer ( no
cover ). The bull was behind brush I ranged at 40 yards. To have a shot
he would have to come around the brush and towards me. I checked the
wind and it was wrong ! Just than the Bull smelled something ( me)
and stepped out of the mud and walked around the brush tasting
the air. By that time I was at full draw and had my pins on his chest
just off center and slight quartering, he stopped at 35 yards and I
sent the arrow. The arrow buried to the fletch . He whirled
around and ran less than 70 yards and piled up. It all happened so fast
as it always does. I wait all year for something that take only seconds
to end, except the 5 hours it took to get him cut up and hauled
out. I wonder where my 20 year old legs and back have gone ?
